Introduction to the Exhibition
Wu Guanzhong is a unique and famous artist in the history of Chinese art in the twentieth century. He has made great contributions to the practice of integrating Chinese and Western art, and his artistic thinking has had a great influence on the development of Chinese painting. He devoted his life to the “nationalization of oil painting” and “modernization of Chinese ink and wash painting.” Combining Western painting with Chinese artistic spirit and aesthetic ideals, he promoted the contemporary transformation of Chinese painting with his outstanding creativity and became an admirable artistic peak.
Zhejiang is the place where Wu Guanzhong's art was born, and he called Zhejiang his “first hometown of art.” In order to return to his alma mater and support the development of art in Zhejiang, in December 2009, Mr. Wu Guanzhong donated 56 paintings and 16 art collections to Zhejiang Art Museum free of charge, and in 2010, his family donated 48 of Wu Guanzhong's important sketches, A Trip to Yunnan. These donations have made Zhejiang Art Museum an important institution for collecting Wu Guanzhong's works.
Shenzhen is a place that Wu Guanzhong has visited several times: in April 1980, a Wu Guanzhong solo exhibition was held in Shenzhen Exhibition Hall (the predecessor of Shenzhen Art Museum), which wrote a chapter of art before the establishment of Shenzhen Special Economic Zone; in September 1985, Mr. Wu Guanzhong was invited to participate in the Shenzhen Fine Arts Festival at the Shenzhen Exhibition Hall, which, together with many other artists, pushed the art tide in Shenzhen to a new high. In 1993, Shenzhen Pok Art Company (formerly Shenzhen Pok-Art Gallery, jointly established by Shenzhen Exhibition Hall and Hong Kong Pok-Art Company in 1980) held the “Pok-Art” National Oil Painting Competition. And Mr. Wu Guanzhong came to Shenzhen to guide the work, contributing to the development of the special zone’s art cause.
Wu Guanzhong: I Owe My Life to Art, a special exhibition in Shenzhen, is organized on the basis of the artist's self-narrative and “I owe my life to art” is the name of his published autobiography. On view are sixty-two pieces, including the best works by Mr. Wu Guanzhong and his family's donations to Zhejiang Art Museum (including works of art given to Wu by his teachers and friends), as well as Wu Guanzhong's paintings and documents collected by Shenzhen Art Museum.
The exhibition belongs to both the “Eminent Artists in Shenzhen,” a signature exhibition series of Shenzhen Art Museum, and the Masterpiece Collection Series of Zhejiang Art Museum. Since Shenzhen Art Museum (formerly named as Shenzhen Exhibition Hall) opened to the public in 1976, many renowned artists have visited multiple times, leaving numerous artistic treasures for the institution. For this reason, Shenzhen Art Museum has curated the exhibition series “Eminent Artists in Shenzhen,” collaborating with partner museums and conducting research based on its own collections and documents to present exhibitions. These exhibitions showcase the efforts of artists in inheriting and developing Chinese art, while highlighting Shenzhen’s unique voice, creating Shenzhen’s characteristics, and telling the stories of the Greater Bay Area and China to the world. Following the special exhibitions of Li Keran and of Song Wenzhi, the “Eminent Artists in Shenzhen” series will grandly present a special exhibition of Wu Guanzhong this year. As a state-owned art museum in China with a large collection of high-quality works, Zhejiang Art Museum has launched the project of the masterpiece collection series, holding exhibitions at home and abroad, establishing the reputation of a nationally influential major museum. As you stroll through this exhibition, you will not only enjoy the artistic charm of Mr. Wu Guanzhong and his teachers and friends but also witness the artistic exchange between Shenzhen and Hangzhou, gaining an understanding of Shenzhen’s artistic stories and Zhejiang’s artistic scene.
“If you miss me, go and see my paintings!” Said Wu. Here, let Wu Guanzhong’s simple and warm narration guide you — to seek the oriental rhythm in his oil paintings, to savor the abstract forms in his Chinese paintings, to sense the artistic pursuit of merging the East and West, and to behold a dazzling artistic life!
